In the Northeast corner of Montana lies a rich heritage dating back to the days when dinosaurs roamed the earth. It was here that Lewis and Clark followed the Missouri River into Montana.  Around the turn of the last century, legendary outlaws also roamed this region along the northern stretch of the Outlaw Trail. You can hang out in cities where history has been preserved in parks, galleries and museums that reflect this rich, exciting history.  You will also find many activities, such as Indian pow-wows, county fairs, wildlife watching, hot air ballooning, rodeos, hunting, fishing, floating, wagon trains and golf, to educate and entertain you.  Fort Peck Lake has over 1,500 feet of shoreline offering year-round recreation.  Visit and enjoy the western hospitality, historic buffalo jumps, miles and miles of wide open spaces and the most spectacular sunsets.

Fort Peck Reservation – Assiniboine and Sioux Nations

Population:  Approximately 4,000

Location:  The reservation is located in the extreme northeast corner of Montana, on the north side of the Missouri River. The Reservation is 110 miles long and 40 miles wide

Description:  The Fort Peck Reservation is home to two separate Indian nations, each composed of numerous bands and divisions. The Sioux divisions of Sisseton/Wahpetons, the Yantonais, and the Teton Hunkpapa are all represented. The Assiniboine bands of Canoe Paddler and Red Bottom are represented.
The reservation is comprised of rolling hills covered with grass and grain.  About half of the area is now used for farming.  Bottom lands, creek beds and coulees support natural timber.  The Missouri River forms the southern boundary.
